Unmatched small Sample Volume
The ability to measure DLS in such small sample volumes is based on two technical requirements: a detection volume significantly smaller than the sample volume and a high-precision positioning system. The latter was made possible by an innovative sample drop detection algorithm. This combination allows us to achieve the unrivalled small detection volume. Technically, the sample volume could be reduced even further, to as little as 80 nl (under some conditions ~ 1 nl!). However, limitations in the dispensing volumes of available drop dispensers routinely used in biochemistry and some other side effects, e.g. the optical properties of microtiter plates, limit the reduction of the sample volume to a theoretical minimum of 15 nl. In routine use of the system, however, the minimum volume is not less than 80 nl when using an automated dispensing system and 500 – 800 nl when the sample is dispensed manually.
